The youth is 12th pass, having Science background and positive attitute. They underwent rounds of written test, Interviews and screening processess conducted at Gorakhpur and Delhi. Currently this batch is undergoing a fully residential training program at Bangalore. We thought that at least 50% of the youth will enroll for this course (pls note that it is a free residential training course where all the expenses are covered followed by assured employment). 15 candidates showed willingness but none of them pursued this course. The 15 candidates started for the training destination by train but got down at some other station (a fellow passenger told them about a job opportunity of becoming cleaners in a temple) and joined the work where they got immediate money. We came to know that 3 months training period was a long wait for them. &lt;br /&gt;Now this is not a one of example. We have witnessed similar incidences many times in the last few years. &lt;br /&gt;Today, I was discussing Maslow’s theory with a team mate and it struck me that the reason the rural youth is behaving in this particular way is because of their unmet basic level needs.&lt;br /&gt;Maslow posited that people want and are forever striving to meet various goals. Because the lower level needs are more immediate and urgent, then they come into play as the source and direction of a person's goal if they are not satisfied.&lt;br /&gt;A need higher in the hierarchy will become a motive of behavior as long as the needs below it have been satisfied. Unsatisfied lower needs will dominate unsatisfied higher needs and must be satisfied before the person can climb up the hierarchy.&lt;br /&gt;Knowing where a person is located on the pyramid will determine his behavior. For example, motivating a middle-class person (who is in range 4 of the hierarchy) with a certificate and free skill training course will have a far greater impact than using the same motivator to affect a minimum wage person from the ghetto who is desperately struggling to meet the first couple of needs.&lt;br /&gt;Another client of ours who wants to train healthcare specialists has worked out a beautiful approach of attracting and retaining the trainees. Initially they were facing a tough task of attracting 12th pass candidates for a diploma course followed by full time employment. They were training the youth free of cost and were also offering them a stipend of Rs. 3000/- per month. After the initial hurdles they revised the stipend amount to Rs. 5000/- per month. &lt;br /&gt;The candidates were thrilled and very enthusiastic after this revision. The bill proposes that companies with a net worth of Rs 500 crore and above or turnover of Rs 1,000 crore should voluntarily spend two per cent of their net profits towards CSR activities and report these to their shareholders in annual reports.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;‘We are looking at a structured regime where India Inc. may execute certain measures and be considered compliant with CSR activities. These activities have to be reported in a particular format by companies in their annual reports. The information they need to provide include money spent on CSR, details on vocational training provided, institutions and non-government organizations engaged in training, number of people trained and/or absorbed, or self-employed,’ an official in the ministry of corporate affairs told The Indian Express.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Early this month, Chief Election Commissioner SY Qureshi had said that CSR is not charity but a question of one's very survival. Attending a conference organized by the Bombay Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Qureshi had said that India needs Warren Buffet and Bill and Melinda Gates to teach corporate houses about the need for CSR. ‘What you do is not CSR but corporate social compulsion,’ he had stated.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In December 2009, the ministry had announced voluntary CSR norms on how firms can deal with the expectations of stakeholders and society. A parliamentary standing committee had proposed later that the new Companies Bill must ask companies to mandatorily spend two per cent of their profits towards CSR activities. By the evening the team was all ready to go raring again.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;One of the things which businesses usually overlook is the personal well being and interest of the people in the teams.We were feeling that when ever we talk to each other, we asked how much  work is completed ? Are you on target? etc... we have no time to ask if all is well with the new kid who just joined the team. This work shop was the second step in that direction. He has provided hope to the hundreds who have been turned away, branded as "useless". He has proved that without high school education, one can still acquire computer skill and get employment. The only pre-requisite to join his course is the knowledge of English alphabets ! &lt;br /&gt;He has associated himself with eJeevika to help the school drop outs. Sundaramurthi' on 7th and 8th Feb,09. Around 250 candidates were screened for Data entry and retail sales jobs.&lt;br /&gt; Tiruvallur witnessed a crazy set of youngsters distributing pamphlets and brochures on the bus stands and roads of the districts. It was a interesting observation ...what works in rural and what doesn't work.&lt;br /&gt;There are a lot of myths about the rural candidates which we have observed.(I'm sure this observation is not limited to us only...it is kind of common sense. But nevertheless let us share it.)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Rural youth doesn't know what it wants.&lt;/span&gt; Well, we came across some interesting people while in the Job Fair. One guy , who is working as a cook in one of the restaurant of Chennai said that he wants to become a pastry taster...We askes why specifically that? He said "I like Pastry, so I want to become a Pastry taster".&lt;br /&gt;Well, jokes apart, Rural youth knows what they want.&lt;br /&gt;Many of the candidates said that they want 'Any Job'. Now this sounds like a vague answer, when we asked them what type of  Job do they want.But probe them deeper  and they will tell you what they dont want.&lt;br /&gt;So they might not know what they want ...but they do know what they dont want. Santosh Mishra. In his address the collector mentioned that the rural youth should try to be enterprising and should aim to become Job Providers.&lt;br /&gt;The Job Fair helped the Team ejeevika to understand the profiles of the rural youth and the challenges faced by them at large.For example, we found out that the 10th and 12th pass candidates who are working as contract labor in some of the MNC's in Shriprembedur area are in a state of turmoil once their contract period is about to end. Usually the contract period is for 1 year and during this time they get a fairly decent salary of Rs. 4,000/- (with pick up and drop facility etc.). We met around 300 candidates of this profile who have no skills, no specific education (diploma/ITI) the experience which they have (mostly assembly line experience ), is not going to get them jobs any where else. If they decide to switch to some other function, they will get paid less than what they are used to. The concept of connecting rural youth to the corporate via ICT got appreciation from many CEO's and Alumni.&lt;br /&gt;As a start up one always on toes to grab feedback and innovate. PAN IIT event provided us that opportunity.
